Nest Box/Chain question
« on: March 21, 2011, 11:50:20 pm »

If I chain up my birds next to nest boxes, will they still use the nest box?

I've only just started playing again after a few months and I'm new to the whole bird thing, I'm about 5 years into this fortress and I've set up a room next to my food storage with about 8-9 nest boxes, instead of trying to manage where animals stay, is it possible to just chain them there?  Or would a grazing area work if it was assigned to that room?

We're all fairly new to this, nest-boxes are a very recent addition. :)

Personally, I set a number of pastures, most for one or two (at most) creatures, but the birds get their own (en mass), within which I put as many nestboxes as I have/feel necessary.

I have no idea if this is efficient, but it seems to work.

They seem to be respecting pastures anyway and actually staying in them, so I guess this will work fine!  No real need to chain anything up anymore it would seem, even guard animals would work better in pastures.

If the birds claim the boxes, they'll pretty much spend all their time on them.

In .20 they did, but in .21, they'll leave if there are no eggs to sit on.

Really? I didn't know. I guess it was just me forbidding the eggs then. The pasture thing should work if you only assign the bird you want to use the nest box and you make it 1 square on the claimed nest box.
