Can I 'shop around' for a new domain registrar?
« on: March 23, 2011, 03:34:22 pm »

I've had a registered domain name with Netfirms for many years, but I think I might be able to get a cheaper price elsewhere than I'm currently being charged.

What are the logistics of transferring this domain to another company? I'm not using any of their actual hosting space, just the name.

You know how you can shop around for new gas/electricity suppliers? I'm hoping I can do the same sorta thing here.

Also, if you happen to know a cheap domain registrar, I'd love to hear about them.

Ty :)

Transfer of domains are usually done via personal contact, aka emailing the representatives of both domain registrars or something. It's possible that the new registrar has a form for that.

Generally the process is initiated by the new registrar, you tell them you want to migrate, they contact the old registrar, the old registrar hands the domain to the new registrar, probably after getting confirmation from you. It's not too complicated.

AFAIK the "cheapest" registrar is GoDaddy (I've had no problems with them... their hosting, however, is kinda sucky. And they make you memorize extremely long passwords :P, but the support is fast). Other people will have complaints about them I guess, so let's hear from them. You're looking at $8-10 a year for a .com or .net domain, probably.

Heheh. GoDaddy are absolutely terrible for prices, as far as I can tell. That, plus the fact they cling onto the domain when it expires. That's never very nice.

You know, you could have posted an example of a cheaper domain registrar... that's what the thread is for.

Thank you for the extremely helpful information, Sergius. :) $8-10 is cheaper than what I'm paying right now as a yearly rate, so I'm definitely going to keep that link handy and strongly consider switching to them.

I'm not too bothered to hear that they cling to expired domains, but I'm still open to any alternate suggestions if someone thinks they can 1-up GoDaddy's price and service.

'Eh, sorry. I would suggest the registrar I'm with, but I think they're UK only, and I also think Moogie isn't in the UK.
So, I'm afraid that limits my finding of registrars that don't necro people's domains. Sorry.

What makes you think that? I'm actually just a few miles outside of London! :D
