This happens to be the Jon Stewart equivalent I was talking about in my last post.

I just meant it in a "making fun of politics and politicians" sense.

Aside from the Governor-General being a bit sillier then your average head of state, Canada appears to have a completely typical Westminister style parliamentary system.

I think the US should have a Governor-General.  I nominate LaVar Burton.

Well, at least the rest of the world gets more reliable news sources about USA than Americans get.  Acting condescending might make you look dumb.

You have a large amount of experience with news sources all over the world?

And I wasn't being condescending. I was being sarcastic.
Quite a bit, yes.  I have researched out of the box.  I've had my share of news sources from all over the world, yes.  Given the fact that the web is full of everything USA I can safely say I've been exposed to American news sources quite a lot.  I've had first hand experience with South America & Western Europe (specially, but not limited to, Spain and Argentina where I've resided).  Asia and Africa are my low points though.

And you were not being sarcastic.  You were being trollish, yet again, and counting.

Every time I read a usually aggressive, racist or particularly ignorant post I end up reading your nickname next to it and can't help but wonder what the fuck is wrong with you.  You can have your own opinions, of course, but stop attacking other people as if you knew better.  You show time and time again that you don't.  You seem to lack the healthy habit of thinking before you type.  You might think you're being funny but let me tell you. Far from it.

Urist..., it's actually really common for other countries to know more about our politics than we do.  Our country is vastly the exception when it comes to not knowing a ton about other countries' internal workings.  That and our news sucks anyway.  Example:  Try following the Middle Eastern + Northern African revolutions in our news...good luck getting accurate news.  Then try Al Jazeera and be amazed.  Next, look at how Al Jazeera is portrayed across all our media:  You would think they were nothing but a terrorist front, because uh...well, I'm pretty sure they've been outright called that by our own politicians.

So yeah.  Other countries often know more about us (and pretty damn near everything else) than we know about ourselves.

Here we go again...

You have lots of knowledge about other countries, including the knowledge of the citizens?
This all started because you dismissed a comment made by a non American citizen (Belgian).

If people are interested in politics they're probably going to be more knowledgeable than those who don't care.  They will go out and get information.  In this globalized world, information is easily accessible for those who want to, specially if we are talking about technologically open First World Countries.

News sources from around the world cover USA but that doesn't happen with other countries.  At least, not that extent.

Americans have a tendency to consume their own culture but they export an impressive amount as well.  The world watches your shows, reads your books, plays your games, even regurgitates some of your news because what the superpower is doing probably matters to a lot of people.

We are flooded with your way of life, your ideas, your political system, your scandals, your decisions, etc.  Hell, in Argentina we changed the emergency number to 911 because people remembered that one (after so many movies) over the old one.

Do not underestimate the knowledge of American culture or politics or current state of affairs just because they don't come from an American Citizen.  Do not overestimate an American Citizen's knowledge if he only watches Mainstream American Media.

I think simply being on the internet and interacting with people from all over the world goes a long way.  Back in the late 90's, I was way more knowledgeable than most people I knew "IRL" on global issues because I actually had direct communication with people from Australia, Britain, Netherlands, South Africa, Kuwait, Malaysia, Philippines, etc, where all anybody else knew was headlines.

And the equivalent for roughly 2008 and beyond is the ability to jump on twitter and get immediate first hand accounts of anything that's going on anywhere in the world with little effort.

I disagree with you... So I'm a troll... How? If you disagree go ahead and tell me but we have to go straight to accusing people of trolling? And if their not trolling, well they must be ignorant.

And what's with the fact that you pretty much told me you decide what's funny and what's not?

Simply put, you shouldn't just say someone is a troll because you disagree with them.

And on a related note, seems to me Obama will replace Bush as being associated with torture.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

If you'd put forth a counterargument to what phmcw actually said, rather than his credentials, I don't think we'd be here.

I actually gotta agree there.

The problem was solved by pointing out a hole in my argument and not with accusations of trolling. I hope we (especially me), have all learned a lesson.

Gentlemen, I'm outta here.

Pre emptive arguments are a bitch, huh?

Pattern -> Attack group of people -> Get called a troll and debated-> Ignore debate, call "Oh! so you accuse me of trolling because I disagree" -> Pretend high moral ground -> flee.

There's something called show posts, you know.

Right, and you basically ignored my post where I actually talked about the whole issue of non American and knowlege of all things America (In this case, politics) and focused on the trolling part which was purposely placed first as to not end in a negative way.

---------

Anyway, it's a funny thing that, as always, there are different extremes to every situation.  While many USA Citizens feel unrepresented in the current bipartisan system and changing that system seems to be a daunting task, here, in Argentina we have a problem of too many parties that block each other out against the Official Power of the Decade (usually Peronistas, which, at this point, means nothing more than name using, forget the ideals they're supposed to stand for).  Alliances are looked down upon because the last joint movement faced the 2001 crisis miserably and lacked cohesion.

Then again, there's a lot of party hopping, corruption, lack of political platforms, etc... And the system works for them due to the low rates of education and high rates of resignation in the educated citizen.  Just gotta spew a few keywords before the election (Security, Education, Better Economy) and proceed to make it all about personality.  Bonus points if you manage to associate your opponent with hated hated politicians from the past.

Who wrote the "social contract"? Rousseau?  I bet he's rolling in his grave right now...

Gentlemen, I'm outta here.

You keep saying this, in multiple threads. You've said it about the entire forum - and yet you always manage to continue to show up and do some more trolling. Disagreement does not a troll make - but when all of your posts in all of the threads basically amount to "what can I say to offend people or otherwise be a jerk", well...

On topic,
Well, I guess there's not much more to add that's on topic, which is, I guess, why this thread derailed so thoroughly. :P
