Wanting to start an online D&D 3e game.
« on: March 23, 2011, 11:33:31 am »

See title. Issues:

1.) Time management
2.) Technical ways of doing it (internet sites, messager etc)
3.) Scheduling issues (posting frequency of players, meeting up for IM difficulties)
4.) Finding dedicated people as players.
5.) Conveying information in short statements players will read and understand.

Suggestions?

Everyone online at once, one of the online mapping programs that others can suggest, WITH VOICE.  You'll be too slow to get much done without voice, and it really cuts down on the inter-player RP.

There are benefits to having some sort of chat client on the side for private messages though.

Also, I don't think voice is needed, but I type pretty fast and generally use much slimmer systems than D&D.

In my experience the biggest pain in the ass is always scheduling. Figure out a session time right away. You probably won't have any shortage of people who want to play, so anyone who can't make the time is shit outta luck. Maybe that sounds a little callous or something, but if you've got an American, a Brit, and an Australian, all working or schooling or sleeping at different hours of the day, odds are it will be impossible to sort out in the long run.

Gametable or something similar makes life a lot easier for the DM on the technical side, if you take a little time to set it up properly. Way better than straight IM'ing it or something.

Also, run a campaign thats friendly to players being able to drop/add back in, and have some backup adventures planned for when only two people show up and the regular adventure can't be continued.

I've been following LordKat's and Spoony's recorded campaigns for well over a year now. They schedule a fixed time, same day every week, so nobody is caught by suprise. Chat is done over Skype (with an IRC chat where the 1000+ viewers discuss things while they watch). Dice rolls are done inside the program they're using for the gameboard; OpenRPG and Maptool both have their advantages and problems.

Regarding finding a good party of players... can't offer much help there. It helps if you are all comfortable and laid-back with voice chat. As DM, let your players joke around, but don't let it get out of hand. Reign in any unreasonable OOC discussion of game events before they start metagaming too badly, but allow the characters themselves to discuss their plan of action if need be; just remind them that time is still passing while they argue. :)

As to conveying things to the party, script out your descriptive paragraphs beforehand and read out the necessary environmental info as your players discover it. If your players ask more specific info about an object or the room they're in, don't be afraid to improvise and make up some flavour on the spot. General rule of thumb here is this: anything that could have ANY importance to the party, should be pre-written and ready for them. Other detail such as the colour of the Elf's flaxen shirt, or the texture of the walls (unless that's important somehow for trap-spotting) can be made-up on the fly.

Finally, you may want to check out the aforementioned campaigns if you want to learn more about how those guys do it.

You could take a swing by the Forum Games and Roleplaying forum and look at all the games there. Maptools is the current medium of choice, though Gametable is fairly decent as well.

The real problem with online games is getting everyone to stay with it.  Half the time people just vanish and stop responding and since it's online there's no way to get a hold of them.  That can really kill games.
