Speed Issues in Vista.
« on: May 11, 2007, 02:57:00 pm »

Hi I'm trying to run Dwarf Fortress on a brand new 2.0 Ghz PC with 2 Gb of RAM. I also have windows Vista installed. The game runs about as fast as a snail across mollases during a north pole night, and is rather unplayable (even the into cinematics) it's the same in windowed or fullscreen.

So... am I hosed? Should I sue microsoft for my impending mental brakdown due to not being able to play? or is there a magic switch somewhere that says Vista:no/yes

DF uses OpenGL graphics so if your graphic card doenst have good 3d drivers you are out of luck (drivers compliant with OpenGl not Direct3d).

That said, a lot of people have had luck updating their video drivers and have the game running well under Vista.  There were also some speed problems reported with User Access Control, if that's what it's called.  I haven't moved over to Vista myself.

Good call on the not moving to vista -.-'' I even miss XP, and XP made me miss '98. but yeah, all I needed to do was update my driver. By the way, my video card is an Intel 82945G Express Chipset. Didn't think to note my driver version before updating though, so that might not be of any help.

I have an nVidia card, and the drivers that come with vista don't have opengl so DF is very slow. The ones you download from nvidia.com work perfectly.

I assume it's the same for most cards.

About UAC, I think that's only an issue if you "install" in a protected directory... I had a game that defaulted to "Program Files", and since the saved games were stored there instead of Documents or whatever, Vista did some weird folder mirroring that broke the game. Any other custom folder was alright.
