Morbidly Depressed Military!
« on: March 17, 2011, 03:11:02 pm »

Well, I don't know what happened, but I was training 20 something dorfs in a danger room with a lever on repeat so they were continuously stabbed at in their steel armor, but somehow a puppy wandered in even though I had the door tightly shut and it got skewered, I've never seen this before but literally every dwarf in that room that wasn't all ready unhappy became unhappy, I was bombarded with downward red arrows when the puppy was impaled.

How do I make my military happier quickly?  Otherwise it looks like they're about to start eating each other over one dead puppy, it's a good thing they don't hang around the butcher's shop on the other end of the fort.

Try engraving the danger rooms floor. I've had babies, puppies, and cats skewered and only one or two red arrows.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Engraved on the floor is a superiorly designed image of a puppy by Urist McMorbid. The puppy is being impaled.

OK, maybe the engravings won't have the desired effect. ;)

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

The danger room is in a sandy loam floor and wall room.

Build some gold statues. Preferably statues depicting a dog getting impaled

That's hilarious. Are they desensitised to death yet, and do they have 'has witnessed death lately' in their thoughts?

Try assigning them to a blinged out barracks. Go for variety over quality to maximise the number of good thoughts.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

If they don't, after a year of puppy skewering, they probably will. I wonder if that'd be an easy, safe way to train your military into emotionless dwarven killbots, by subjecting them to repeated puppy executions.

Ah, green cadets, witnessing their first puppy skewering...  It's fun, sometimes, to see how fast they snap.  One little errant dog and one set of spikes, and they're all shook up and traumatized.  Yet, another year at the most, and they watch their wife crawl away from a goblin, her legs both shattered at every bone and joint, before they hack the goblin at the waist, and they don't even notice.

They grow up so fast...

Do training soldiers admire things? I have tried having my barracks be partly inside my statue garden, but don't seem to have any 'admired an X' thoughts in dwarfs that have been training for a while.

I like sending them out into the caverns on defend burrow. They engage all of the nasties in the caverns. Preferably undead nasties if you embarked in a terrifying biome.

The survivors are grizzled veterans who don't afraid of anything.

Military can be kept happy fine by making sure they have things to kill, a month or so off patrol/training here and then to go lounge about in their bedrooms (don't bother with barracks for sleeping) and the dining room.

My count on the other hand...

No time off!

All war, all the time.

Its okay if they're unhappy. Very unhappy or miserable is problematic, but unhappy is fine.

I do allow them to sleep in their own rooms. They get a positive thought from that and a negative thought from a long patrol, so that there should even them out. They get additional positive thoughts from killing things. Only raw recruits should feel any sort of sadness should friends die.
