Numbers in the justice screen: what do they mean!?
« on: March 16, 2011, 10:24:25 pm »

Okay, I've got ten chains set up for Justice.  I've only got two criminals, both of whom have served their time.  When I go to the justice screen, this is what I see:

The numbers in red, saying “Cages and Chains: 10 of 11".  I've never enabled justice before (could never get the baron workaround to work before, so I never really needed to worry about placating nobles), so I don't have a clue what this means and the wiki didn't say.  Is this something to worry about, or what?

Maybe you should build an eleventh chain?

I think it's trying to say that the Dwarf is tethered to chain/cage #10 out of 11 total.

Basically, it's just identifying which chain/cage is being used.

Maybe. I don't know. I've always killed my nobles before I could be bothered with them.

Not quite...

This is correct - the first number is how many jails (chains/cages) you have designated, and the second number is how many jails the justice system wants you to designate, which is one for every 10 citizens of your fortress.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Well, I think an even (slightly) more accurate way of putting it would be that the second number is "how many chains/cages you have in rooms* designated for justice".
*rooms in the dwarven bedroom-or-dining-hall sense, not the human walled-in sense.

So, you can have one enormous room dedicated to justice, and fill it up with chains which are automatically used for justice.

Do artifact chains count as more than one? Because I have an adamantium chain named Zig Foundrybeaters in one of my old forts, and was wondering if I could...

wait for it...

Thanks to both Aramco and Quietust.  I shall expand the jail post-haste.

All that constructing an artifact chain in a jail cell will make every dwarf that gets incarcerated really happy and fuzzy inside from admiring it.

I suggest making a well out of it, though...it'll do ya more good.

Adamantine chain menacing with spikes of EVERYTHING will net you more reliable, and probably just plain more, value.
