Alarms, and a whole bunch of them.

I turn on about 6 to wake me up, each one coming in 15 to 30 minute intervals. I have the habit of turning off the alarms without waking up (thus having me wake late), so after the fifth my body usually takes the hint.

Yeah, I support the above statement, and add an extra hint: hide the extra alarms along your room, in places where you will hear the noise but will take you an effort to reach them and stop them. Bonus points if they are hard to stop. That did the trick for me. (I recall one time when I woke up groggy, and became aware after a minute or so that I was trying to stop an alarm by smashing it repeatedly against the floor)

My phone talks to me in increasingly abusive ways, including telling me what time it is and how late I'm going to be, and I have to fuss around in the settings to disable the alarms because I put them on "snooze only" IE it won't let me press a button to disable them as normal.  I'm going to try out one of the sliding-puzzle apps, except I hate those, and I'd just end up force-rebooting the phone.  Also I seem to be sleeping through them anyway.  God help me if there's ever a fire in my room, I'd sleep through the fire alarm.

I got a book that says to get sun early in the day.

Can you get up an hour before, and stay outside for an hour?
(less may work, but it's not guarenteed)

So I woke up this morning* to discover that not only did I somehow unplug my alarm clock that I'd set up in another room (I live alone so it was definitely me), but I also uninstalled my two alarm clock programs from my phone.  I can barely figure out how to do that when I'm awake.  I also discovered that my third alarm clock was still going off...four hours after I'd set it for.

Onward to plan B, that whole "get sunshine or exercise before work everyday" thing.  Now I just have to get up early enough to start.

Yeah, that's typical too. I've woken up at times to find alarm clocks unplugged, mobile phones separated from their batteries, and so on. That's why I began the hidden alarm clocks gambit.

Do you really have sunlight when you wake up? How late do you wake up usually?

Well, I put that * there for a reason; it's often afternoon these days.  There is sunlight...but it's Seattle so it's not a great latitude and there's usually tons of clouds.

Ideally I want to get up 7ish...

You know, most likely you're just whittling down sleep deficit from trying to do too much.  I'd bet if you kept up the 12 hours of sleep a day thing for a while it'll die down and you'll get more done in the long run since you'll have more energy.

I used to have this problem. Solution: Sleep early. As in like right after sunset. I'd wake up quite early too and be very energized to do stuff. I find that daytime sleep is not very refreshing at all.

Also make sure you're not trying to get yourself to sleep by tiring yourself out. Especially masturbating. That stuff drains too much energy, which your body tries to fix by sleeping more.

And yeah, sleep deficit. You've got a bit of sleep owed by sleeping too late too much, your body is still trying to fix things that it hasn't. If you're still sleeping too much after a week or so of going to bed early, see a doctor.

For me I am at least aware of when I wake up and chose to sleep longer. (I will sleep in if I hear yelling when I wake up for example)

I have two solutions that work for me but no one else (I hate alarm clocks TO DEATH)

1) I watch my clock while sleeping all the time. This causes sporatic sleep. Actually this is usually how I cure Insomnia if I have to wake up early.
and
2) I cannot sleep with my TV on. I can use it to stay awake when I wake up.

Though I have a strong internal clock so I just about chose when I wake up. I've rarely been surprised when I woke up.

That is one thing you can do... Chose when you are waking up. Don't just sleep.

From the OP, I'm a 27-year-old male.

My body's at least started to revert back to "9 hours every night, no exceptions, no matter when it is or how much you need to only get seven hours tonight".

Which is going to be a lot of fun today, considering I woke up in pain and feeling like throwing up (it's a thing I'm going to be seeing a doctor about in a couple days, and maybe other stuff).  I have no idea what's going to happen when "absolutely must get sleep" and "hurts too much to sleep" mix, but it's not going to be good for me.

Anyway, I'm sure you all really needed to know that.  But at least it's not 12 hours anymore, so thanks...
