Dwarven stupidity, what do?
« on: March 12, 2011, 01:46:28 pm »

Basically, whenever I'm trying to wall the caverns off and claim a small portion of them for ease of movement in a fledgling fort, my dwarves start acting like idiots and wall themselves out. It takes me quite a while to finally coax them inside and redesign the wall in such a way that they don't find themselves trapped in the cavern. It gets quite frustrating. I also risk losing some dwarves while they're exposed. I was wondering if there's a simple solution to this problem. What do you usually do in these situations?

No, leaving the dwarf there is not a good idea because I'm trying to run a quasi-hermit fort (starting seven only) and I don't want this little AI quirk to turn the fun into Fun before I've even got bedrooms ready.

I believe the usual trick is to put walls wherever you don't want them to stand and them suspend construction so they don't actually build it.

I always build walls in the following order: West, North,Sotuh East. This way by the time final wall is done to dwarf if going to be on the inside. It gets a little bit trickier when walling off passages, some times I dig an alternate route around the outside so any western or northern tunnels lead to the east, allowing the mason to wall it up from the inside.

I use the "specify a wall and suspend it" method as previously mentioned. Remember dwarves won't build a wall while standing diagonally to it, and they won't build a wall while standing on a spot with an in-progress or suspended wall.

I rely on fact that dwarves can't build walls diagonally. So the last wall, I build, has non-diagonal access only from inside the fortress.

Like this (h = build here!):
Code: [Select]
##o===
=oh###
####☺#
#FORT#

Allways works!

That's a good thing to keep in mind too, but it doesn't always work out quite that way if you are blocking passages or building something that incorporates natural features.

If you want dwarves inside a square, build the last wall on the east or south side.  If you want them outside, the last one should be north or west.  Failing that, you can always build a 1x1 drawbridge, get your dwarves inside, and close it.  I usually use 2x3 since it's easier to see when it's open or closed, and this has the added benefit that you can use the caverns without having to tear apart walls.

Always remember, Dwarfs build from the left.
