Volcano oddities (spoilers)
« on: March 14, 2011, 09:16:37 am »

Alright. This is a relatively interesting embark.

I embarked on a volcano, hoping to get some easy to use magma along with the clay that was there to get a serious clay industry going. When I embarked, I received massive lag. Eventually, it stopped and I could actually unpause the game. I then start receiving cave in warnings from about 55 z levels below the surface. The game is basically unplayable, so I break out DFhack and reveal the map.

Turns out, my third cavern is basically hell. Half of it has a slade floor, the magma sea is pouring into the pits, and the semi molten rock is actually under some of the slade areas. Can't quite figure out how to upload pictures, but heres the seed info.

Interestingly, there is magma within slade walls, creating an area where its 7/7 magma and slade wall. If your looking for it, its up north, near a stream/brook. Look for a 3*3 area of massive slopes on a volcano next to a stream.

As for the discussion, how many other odd areas like this have been found? Any thing I can do to fix this?

Press Prnt Scr, or Print Screen if it's written out fully.  It should be up above the backspace key.  This will put a screenshot in the clipboard.  Open paint, hit Ctrl V, save it, and toss it on photobucket or your host of choice.  Keep in mind that unless you edit it a bit, you'll show your desktop thingies as well.  So, if you've got "Mozilla - Hot Elf Acti..." on the taskbar, you know, you better share some links.

There we go. That's the main cavern floor. That 7/7 water in the lower right is encased in slade. Lower spots have magma encased. That's at 104 height absolute.

Press Prnt Scr, [...] Keep in mind that unless you edit it a bit, you'll show your desktop thingies as well.

Can't add to the Volcano conversation, but the Windows key-combo "Alt-PrtScrn" (however your particular Print Screen key is marked, but you obviously found it) will take a screenshot of the currently active window only.  Means you don't have to cut off task-bars, partially visible edges of other games (you traitor!), spreadsheet titles containing privileged corporate information and the like.

Editing it down is always advisable, if not putting annotations onto the image, so you may not be saving yourself much time if you're editing it anyway.  But it's something useful to know about.  There are programmes for screen capturing (some with additional features like "window under my cursor" or time-delayed capturing so you can capture something even within a program that would normally appropriate PrintScrn presses for itself, or even time-lapse (every 30 seconds or so, autosaving to file), but on the whole they're just toys unless you have a particular need for those tricks.

Anyway, apologies for the diversion.

I have had this happen on occasion, though not on volcano maps. Basically, the world wasn't painted quite right and the caverns extended into hell (or the hell extended into caverns, either might be valid) or even hell being open to the world. The separation is a sharp and flat block rather than a kind of staggered mix that you normally see when biomes change. magma and cave lakes begin to drain into hell, forming obsidian which causes caveins (on top of the already huge lag from all that fluid moving around).

It's clearly a glitch, in any case. In my case I had been cooking up worlds to try to find a decent embark, but it had crashed (or froze and I killed the process) a few times. Not sure if that somehow messed up world gen - fairly possible - but after quitting cleanly it seemed to stop.
