The raws say that the following can be fired.

Clay
Silty Clay
Sandy Clay
Clay Loam
Fire Clay

None of the secondary combinations work, though, eg Sandy Clay Loam.

It should, but I've got sandy clay on mine and had a little trouble.  After digging up the first bits of clay, it took a few months before the clay-craft options were available, using a magma kiln.  So, if there's issue with it then wait a bit and check again.

If you designate a zone, it should list "clay(x)" about 2/3rds of the way down, on the right.  As long as x>0, you have soil that you can harvest clay from.  In vanilla DF, all of the soils with "clay" in the name can be used for pottery, except "sandy clay loam" and "silty clay loam" (which is pretty much what slink said).

Also, unlike sand you can designate a clay zone on grass.  Grass does not block the collection of clay the way it blocks sand.

Also, obviously, magma avalanches and tsunamis weren't exactly a contingency covered in the mission briefing.
I can assure you that Ardentdikes is not the first fortress to be flooded with magma. What's unusual is that we actually meant to flood it with magma.
