Topic. I just started playing again. The last time I played was .16 I believe.
I just noticed one of my starting animals had the hungry marker so I checked its status and yup it was hungry. When did animals start getting hungry or thirsty and what do I do about it?

Grazing animals eat grass now, but other animals still don't have to eat. Bigger animals generally require more grass, I believe.

It would probably help to set up a pasture zone where there's grass, and assign the grazing animals to it.

BTW: With the default settings, tame elephants will essentially starve to death WHILE EATING because they cannot consume enough grass fast enough to stay alive.

huh. Well I started out with 2 random Yaks. The front of my fort is grassy (for now). How large of a pasture zone should I need?

And if Elephants are incapable of feeding themselves is there any way to keep tame elephants alive without modding?

no way
but you can change to something like  [GRAZER:40],
but that still make them eating all the time, thus being less useful(if not at all) as chained war animal.
