Mark the items for dumping via the Stocks screen.  This is easier said than done, because it's not easy to discover which items belong to are held by the goblin.

So, the easiest way to do that is to use (d) (b) (h) to mark the cage, the goblin, and the items the goblin is carrying as "hidden".  Then they'll show up on the Stocks screen with an "H" by them, and you can say "Aha!  I shall dump THAT one!"  Then you can use (d) (b) (H) (I think) to un-hide it all.

Build a cage with goblin and d-b-d it.

Only in DF do you get discussions of how to genocide babies and children because they take up resources, slaughter merpeople for their bones, eat raw kitten meat, and set carefree, happy elves on fire.

Is someone keeping track of all these?

Hmm... well, first you need to have a bookkeeper.  I guess I should mention that.  Once you have a bookkeeper who has been at least half-assedly keeping up with the fortress inventory, you can use the Stocks screen.  You get there by pressing (z) and then left/right to get to "Stocks".  Then arrow down to "weapons", "shields", "armor", or whatever.  When you're on the category you want, press (Tab) to switch from groups-of-items mode to single-items mode, and then you can mark individual items.

I'm a little vague on the exact keypresses after that, because I don't quite have them memorized.

First, get all your cages together.  I suggest making an animal stockpile that allows only goblins + trolls (and that does *not* allow empty cages), then have that stockpile take from all the other stockpiles your cages are in.  If your cages are already all in one place, you can skip this part.

Next, use d-b-d to mass dump the cages.  Make sure you have a garbage zone set up.

Now, go to the stocks screen, go down to cages, and *remove* dump from all those cages.  You don't need to expand the list, you can undump a whole stack of cages at once.

This will make it so that your dwarves take the stuff off of the prisoners and dump it, without throwing the cage itself into the dump.

Once the items are in the dump, use d-b-c to reclaim them.

The guy telling you to hide them is just trying to make them easy to find on the stocks screen (they'd have an H beside them, so you could mark them for dumping, then unhide them in the stocks screen), but that's way too much work, because then you have to look for hidden weapons, armor, socks and all that other crap goblins might be wearing.  When you have 100 caged goblins, you'll understand why you don't want to do things one at a time :)

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

I do the following to strip all captives (goblins, elves, humans, etc) in cages:

1. d-b-c (Claims all items - caged entities possessions start off forbidden)
2. d-b-d (marks everything to be dumped)

You can then cursor over each caged goblin, go into their cage, and unmark their cage (from inside the k or t function) to be dumped. Doing it INSIDE the cage description, rather from the main viewer, ONLY unmarks the cage itself from dumping, leaving all carried items by the goblin for dumping.

You will have to have a designated garbage dump (created under act(i)vity zone).

Dont forget to reclaim the items dumped from the goblins when you want to do something with them (ie, melt them, trade them, etc).

Note: you don't need an active bookkeeper to do this.

Also, animal stockpiles make it a lot easier to do this quickly and easily, as all caged creatures will be taken to an animal stockpile if there is room in the stockpile.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

Build a cage with goblin and d-b-d it.
This is the easiest way.
But remember that the items may be forbidden by default, so mass unforbid the cage tile first. ([d]->[ b ]->[something])

Ninja'd by more informative people.

The answer partly depends on why he wants to remove items from the caged goblins.  If he wants to remove only their weapons and shields but permit them to retain their armor, for melee dwarf practice, then dumping the whole lot with (d) (b) (d) would be counterproductive.

I must also point out that another way to remove the items from the caged goblins is to let the goblins out of the cage, kill them, and then unforbid the resulting pile of blood-splattered used apparel and accessories.

^^EXACTLY^^

Throw them into a pit-o-doom! >30 Z-levels of pure falling horror, resulting in a pile of miscellaneous goblin pieces (along with all those misc. kitten pieces [in my pit-o-dooms case]) and a pile of valuable equipment!

Items carried by Invaders initially start off "Forbidden"... to prevent you from just walking up to that hostile Goblin Spearman and taking his Spear out of his hands and dumping it. So to disarm caged prisoners, I build the cage (b - j - select the spot - x - select the cage - enter), then bulk un-forbid the cage and all of its contents (d - b - c - click on the cage), then bulk dump the cage and all of its contents (d - b - d - click on the cage), then un-dump just the cage itself (k - cursor over the cage - enter - d).

Possibly one or more of those steps isn't needed, but the sequence works.
