Major crash issue
« on: October 04, 2006, 03:38:00 am »

Okay, my game has crashed at the exact same point in early summer four times. Every time I got the error "Unit file corrupted/missing" and a whole bunch of this in the error log:

BUILDPATH SAME SQUARE VIOLATION
BUILDPATH SAME SQUARE VIOLATION
BUILDPATH SAME SQUARE VIOLATION
BUILDPATH SAME SQUARE VIOLATION
BUILDPATH SAME SQUARE VIOLATION
BUILDPATH SAME SQUARE VIOLATION
BUILDPATH SAME SQUARE VIOLATION
BUILDPATH SAME SQUARE VIOLATION

I re-installed the game and copied over the save file but that didn't help at all. I have a save game a minute before the crash and ten minutes before the crash if Toady wants to look at it. I know that this is an alpha but it sucks when I lose my latest and greatest fortress to an error like this.

How many files are in the region# folder in "data/save"?  This kind of error comes from it trying to find a file and it not being able to find it (which could be any number of things), or from a copy over or some old save information from a previous folder being in the current one.  There could be a bug that causes the files to be deleted/corrupted, or it could be from the way the save files have been backed up and copied around.

"How many files are in the region# folder in "data/save"?"

Should I email you the save folder?

I just realised that the folder should have several hundred files in it.

I'm screwed aren't I?

ALL IS NOT LOST!

I think that I figured out a work-around. Luckily I'd made a backup copy of the save game folder just after world generation so that I wouldn't need to generate another world if my save got corrupted. I copied the contents of the region1 folder to my latest save game and instead of crashing a human caravan turned up along with a trade rep.

That might work for a while but in general, the region#.sav file won't be in sync with the old files -- it might demand another unit chunk later on that was generated well after your backup.  Or it might not -- it depends on how much you've played.  In general, both the region# folder and the region#.sav need to be backed up when you back up save files, and they should be treated as a single unit.

It's a year later and not one crash!
