Rabbits and cavies
« on: March 05, 2011, 08:16:49 am »

Hi,

I had read about someone butchering cavies (in a signature, I guess), because "not everybody sees them as pets". So I bought quite a lot at embark (10 females, 4 males), plus rabbits too, to setup a breeding emporium.

Well, I was kinda disappointed when I saw the only butchering return was a skull (on adults or pups alike), no meat, no fat (even when they are described as "enormous and muscular" or "enormous and very fat"), no skin, nothing.

I then thought to myself "well, I guess I can sell them to those damn tree-huggers", but when the Elven caravan came, I couldn't transfer those pets to be traded. I had cages, but I'm not sure it would make a difference...

So, my question is : Is there a way to sell animals to caravans ?  Are those animals a waste of oxygen, like they seem to be, or do they have any kind of use ?  Practice targets, maybe ?

This thread will help: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=78021.0

Not entirely sure as I've never tried that myself, but there's a long-standing bug that any attempts to haul caged animals to trade depot releases them.

You can pit them into the cavern, and they will do a quite good job on exploration, and provide a nice lookout for those nasty stuff down there.

EDIT: And there's this thread

Yeah I did something similar with rabbits recently and was disappointed when it turned out they were too small to give any meat. If all else fails, they make good totems, though.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Agreed, BlueRobin, I made totems out of them, but I'd rather use stone or wood. Much easier than having to slaughter a throng of rodents (although a bit less fun, I concede).

JWNoctis, thanks, those threads are really interesting. A shame that the wiki didn't give more information about them :)

I think that was WHY the wiki didn't list any butcher returns for them.
