Help with vomiting cats & dogs!
« on: March 04, 2011, 04:09:49 pm »

Don't know how it happened but my fortress is covered with piles and piles of vomit! :o Globs of this green stuff cover the floors, the dining tables, the food stockpiles, hospital beds...everything! I managed to track down a whole bunch of cats and dogs running around with the status "Nauseous" and I suspect they are the culprits (or the victims?); though I can't really be sure. In any case, the situation seems to be getting worse as the vomit appears in more and more places throughout the fortress!

Has anyone had this happen to their fortress? How can I stop the vomit and clean everything up? I thought of getting rid of the nauseous cats and dogs but I can't find a way to target a specific animal for slaughter (if I go in the 'stocks' list I can't differentiate the nauseous kitties from the healthy ones).

And does anyone know how this could have happened? (note: my miners did break into a cavern and fought some poisonous forgotten beasts moments before this 'vomit explosion' happened)

The FB was carrying a vapour/gas/extract/blood that causes contact-nauseousness. Shoeless dwarves will also be screwed, though it may wear off.

View the sick kitties with V. Press P. If they're not owned by somebody, hit S, which will make them be designated for butchering.

If they're owned, there's options.

I had a duck do this once...

Kill them all, or at least stick them in cages. You may want to look up dwarven bathtubs or fill a popular hallway with water 2-3 tiles deep. DFcleanmap also helps.

Thanks for the help, so it was the FB after all.

Does making a dwarven bathtub 'cure' the animals that are nauseous or slaughtering them is the only way?

I know this is exceptionally unhelpful, but haha.  Only in Dwarf Fortress! ;)

Making a dwarven bathtub at the entrance into your caves will wash the FB extract off of dwarves leaving the caves, presumably in time for them to not be infected. It will not cure your dogs and cats, but it may prevent further infection.

The symptoms may wear off after a while or be replaced by paralysis/necrosis which'll take care of the problem eventually. In case of necrosis, prepare for miasma.

Okay thanks, going to make the bathtub at the cave entrance then.

About infected pets that are owned by someone, what is the way to get rid of them?

There are many different approaches, but they all have one thing in common, the death of the animal.

A good approach is a room with no floor, but instead a bridge above to a 10 z level drop, linked to a lever.  Station the pet owner inside, leave the doors pet-passable, then as soon as the pet enters, make the doors non-pet-passable, order the dwarf out, and with some luck the pet ends up trapped.  A pull of the lever will then solve your problem.  If the pet escapes, try again, eventually it will work.

I wonder if a skilled animal caretaker would help.
