is it possible for your civ to go down while you're playing?

all of sudden, after about three years, no more caravan from them, no more migrants.

any ideas?

Life (in dwarf fortress) is a cocophany of flavours, each more succulent than the last - why not sample them all?!

Check the legends. But I don't think it is even possible, as world history doesn't continue while you are playing fortress mode, basically nothing happens in world outside.

No, but you can sometimes get a few caravans or migrants from your civ, that had already gone down before you embarked. Your fort could be the last bastion of your civilization.
