building a magma safe well over a magma source
« on: March 01, 2011, 08:53:44 am »

building a magma safe well over a magma source should enable dwarfs to collect magma in magma safe buckets

then they should be able to dump that in a magma pond, as is done with normal water ponds

Running around with magma buckets is sure to result in !!fun!! if one of your dwarves trips... Anyway, it's no different from carrying around a bucket of molten metal, so it should be possible. You'd need to take into account the magma cooling though. It makes no sense to be able to transport magma from one end of the map to the other without it solidifying.

Simple addition, can see use as a burning oil substitute for the unscrupulous/fun. You have my support.

It makes no sense to be able to transport magma from one end of the map to the other without it solidifying.

Considering that - magma, or as we should call it on surface: lava - would in most cases already be a high viscose fluid (depending mostly on the SiO2 parts of it)... but apart from that, what about the pond? As there is no further heat source the molten rock should be solidifying in it over time - so that would be good to generate whatever type of stone the source "magma" would produce under surface conditions, but not so much useful as a kind of moat...

Edit: But I like the idea for defense - once the time where we can spoil pots of heated oil, burning water, etc. over the heads of the invading troops ;)

DaVinci: Well - a nice cinematic addition to the corresponding wikipedia articles (I'll keep that in mind for players reference for my RPG sessions)... but with the original buckets mentioned - scientists do sample lava probes (with a small bucket on a long stick so to say) and as also mentioned, carrying a pot of liquid steel and one of molten rock shouldn't be such of a difference (given reasonable protection, whole suit or just gloves, heavy clothing and evtl. proper goggles)... and as dwarves are supposed to live underground i venture that they are more resistant to heat (geothermal gradient) then our average human... just consider the temperature in your average coal mine and add wearing full plate + gambeson to that)

P.S.: Well, am I contratictioning myself here somewhat? Yes, I guess I am.... (once being on par with reality compared to abstraction layers need to be in a game)

Magma would have to actually start cooling for this to be even remotely acceptable. Magma smelting is already ignoring a lot of chemistry and heat requirements, at the very least you should be forced to provide connected magma or rotate "fresh" magma in with pumps.

That would make my overcomplicated magma transportation network useless, no way!!
Seriously though, magma operations are too much of an exploit as they are, and now you want to put that unlimited energy in a bucket.
At least magma from buckets shouldn't be used to fill a pond (probably it should work like that cyan water which was basically a contaminant). This way it could be used as reaction ingredient or as something to pour on attackers.

Yea magma buckets are like the worst possible physics violation for no gain. In fact it'd detract from the game by making magma works look less awesome.

Heavy clothing protection? Hmm, I'm thinking more like heavy ceramic/stone protection. Imagine a scenario where dwarves could carry around heat resistant ceramics and build heat shields out of that stuff! Oh wait. They can already do all that. Just order them to erect a frigging stone wall.
