Shortest Lived Dwarf
« on: February 28, 2011, 09:07:01 pm »

So I have this fortress where the entrance is on the west side of a deep ravine with a long bridge over it to the east side.  Some migrants show up one day on the east side of the map and head westward to cross the bridge to get to my fortress.  I'm watching them move along when, out of nowhere, an elephant races down from the north to the bridge as the migrants are crossing it, tramples one of the migrant dwarves to death, then runs off.

I could not stop laughing.

Had a military dwarf give birth. The baby was pretty much immediately headshotted by an arrow.

Not exactly a "shortest lived dwarf" per se, but I've embarked where the game immediately had a cave-in to the magma sea, dumping the entire expedition into the magma the instant the game started.  (Achievement Unlocked.)

Well I had one where I spawned right next to a small group of werewolves that took out a dwarf, that was probably the fastest death strictly speaking..

However one that took longer but was more humorous and claimed more lives was when I was digging out my cave and then bam, four deaths at once.. My wagon was on top of a frozen lake that unfroze, dumping four dwarves (minus the two miners and one lumberjack) and all my equipment to their doom.

This was a while back, I've had a wagon start over a lake once since then, making it very uncommon, but it can happen (at least it could, dont' know if things were changed in later versions).

I've had babies land in ponds after being born before. Twice in one fort, in fact.

It was... disturbing.

Mothers are apparently more likely to give birth in stressful situations; a baby is more likely to be born when the mother is in a situation which will result in its (the baby's) immediate, gory, and painful death.

that makes sense from an evolutionary perspective; the mother sheds weight so at least one of them may live.

Well, I literally have the shortest-lived dwarves right now...maxage 10:20.  It's interesting to have a five year old expedition leader, although the core purpose of this test has to do with long-term dwarven genetics.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.
