Totems and blessings.
« on: April 04, 2011, 01:57:44 am »

Basically, this is an idea ive had fortotems, the otherwise useless things you can make.
basically, they can be placed like buildings. afterwards a priest type noble can bless them. when there are two blessed totems, you can link them causing a glowing barrier that undead creatures cannot cross. gives a use and reason to make them .

I don't think a barrier against undead would be appropriate, but maybe give dwarves a happy thought if the totem relates to one of the gods they worship.

Here's an idea:
Totems can be specifically made for a god. Dwarves who pass by their god-totem gain a happy thought.

God, do they even read the posts before them first?  ;D

That being said, I totally agree with both of them.

I like that idea. (although I'd say that providing a barrier against the undead might at least be appropriate in the case of artifact-level totems or in otherwise rare circumstances)

Sounds far too easy. Sure it is easy to wall out invaders using other methods, but those have consequences and I think Toady wants to make it harder eventually.

Also magical barriers seem elfy to me. That is not used as an insult, it does sound appropriate for elves and I think it would be cool if they had such abilities using the skulls of their enemies or whatever. Dirt and steel is dwarfy. Hard work resulting in solid armor, walls, and mechanisms which will make you grow a beard just looking at them.

That's what dwarves do when their girlfriend breaks up with them. Go out, find and elf, and throw him ass-over-teakettle into the nearest volcano, in the hope that it'll give Armok a chuckle and that they'll send their lover back to them.
