Stone Stockpile Bin not working
« on: April 04, 2007, 03:30:00 am »

I have a Stone Stockpile with a Bin on it, and the Dwarves are not using it to put the stone in it... and I obviously have a lot of stone.  What gives?  The other stockpiles are using their bins perfectly.

Bins can't hold raw stone.  They can hold stone blocks, though.

So what do I do with all of this stone?  Just turn them into an endless supply of blocks?

This as already pointed out is not a bug, it is intended behaviour.

There are many options for dealing with stone, that are discussed all over the forums here and over the dwarf fortress wiki.

A few of my favorite are these:
*Don't create stockpiles at all, just let them lie where they are. Messy but much more efficient.
*Create stockpiles in every hallway and outside.  Works OK, looks a little better then above, but still not great.
*Make blocks like MAD and store those in bins. This works well with both of the above stockpile options.

Also, I've found that stone storage issues are purely a function of how quickly you build. It's at least a year before you need to worry about alcohol and housing, so if you take your time and slowly build into the mountain, keeping current on hauling tasks isn't an issue. Dwarves on hauling tasks have an annoying tendancy to alternate between opposite sides of the universe to pick items to haul, so the longer you wait to catch up on hauling, the more difficult it will be. Magma rushing is about the best way to gauruntee clutter for life. If you wanjt to be tidy, just take your time to build.

I also use 'wandering' craftdwarves shops... I build them in areas that are chock full of grey stone. Have a (hopefully legendary) craftsdwarf crank out the crafts, good for trade, and clear up the mess.

Just gotta have a few bins to store the stone crafts (i think ~25 fit in one) otherwise you don't really clear the problem. And then to trade, the haulers haul each item singly, instead of bins.

Edit: 'wandering' as in i dismantle them whence the area is cleared. another gets built in a new (messy) area.

Yeah, wandering shops are a lifesaver, I also use wandering mason and mechanic shops, and of course there's always catapults, which are a great way to clean out large dining rooms/tree-farms.
