There's a serpent man civ sitting in the caverns in my current fortress, but there appears to be only one survivor there. On the units list it appears as "Friendly", with it's facial fat missing.  When I ventured down there there were the bodies of several others, and a forgotten beast. Later another forgotten beast turned up and attacked it, and after a fairly lengthy battle the monster died, with no wounds at all inflicted on this odd surviving serpent man, armed only with a tower cap shield and spear (and its bite).

I've not seen something like this happen before, and thought that underground civilisations were always hostile in Fortress Mode.

Ok, so now my resident cave swallow tribe is dealing with their third forgotten beast.  The friendly, now named, spearman has lost his arm and is flying away from the battle, but there's another spearman and blowgunner who ran out of ammunition so she's now wrestling.  The fight has been going on so long that they are now a spearmaster and an elite wrestler.  The forgotten beast is a scaled spider which is all but completely broken.  But they can't seem to kill it.  And honestly I'm concerned about intervening now because they've effectively set up a cave swallowman danger room in my caverns.

I suppose I could send marksdwarves to kill them all but it seems unfair.
