Visitors to entertain

So it only makes sense, the more important your fort gets, the more temp. visitors you should get.

These could include more liasons and diplomats, no doubt, to hold important meetings and such. But I was thinking...

Once you've got a monarch, it only makes sense that you'd be VERY important with other races, and especially other dwarven civs if they're arround. So periodically, with trading caravans, or with their own little entourage, visitors may arrive.

These may require high standard rooms. Therefore, bedrooms would be assignable to VIP1. Once you assign a bedroom to VIP1, VIP2 would be available, and so on and so forth.

Upon these visitors arriving, they would claim one of the VIP suites available, then run around conducting meetings and such. It would be assumed they were important guests and as such would be exept from any economic charges etc, they'd only get food and drink anyway.

As DF progresses and we get guilds and religions and stuff active properly then that adds more scope for visitors.
You might get a foreign monarch, a notable craftsperson or tradesperson, a diplomat, a legendary warrior, religious leader, etc. etc.
Basically, they'd probably meet important people, especially nobles, or crafts people they needed to talk to, or religous gatherings, or whatever. They'd spread the news of your fortress when they left too, depending on how good their stay was, and the benefits of having them there may include making your dwarves super happy, or giving them exp. boost from talking with a master of their trade, or giving something for your nobles to do, everything really. Possibilities are huuuuuge!

Of course, there'd be downsides too. If some Human King arrives, meets your King, looks round the fort, has a few meetings, attend a royal banguet, falls in love with UristcGoldigger, generally having a great time, then walks outside and promplty gets shot by a soon-to-be !!Kobold Assasin!! then the Humies might... well, not like you much.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

Awesome.

Mind you, the diplomats and traders and whatnot would be a fluid aspect of trade and diplomacy.

Traveling philosophers and artists (legendary craftsmen?) could be a cool bonus, if they could be made to matter.

Yes, legendary craftsmen were an idea.

They'd turn up and probably talk to everyone of that particular craft, so all your masons for example.

Pros. all your masons get an exp. bonus, the craftsdwarf would make an artifact level creation as a demonstration of his skill and let you keep it. :D And maybe a perm. happiness bonus might be nice. So like, a +1 'Urist McMason will always remember the day he met legendary mason visitor Urist McSUPERMASON'

Cons. all your masons spend a lot of time On Break/Attend Meeting :P

Going to add to suggestions list I think XD

So... visiting craftsman as a type of mood, where the user makes Noble type requests rather than obscure materials requests and then leaves?

Well we plan on having taverns in the game Dwarf mode in about release 5 of the arc. I'm assuming that we might have visitors come to the from off map.

Iv seen people who haven't had a redheaded person in their family for quite a while, and then out of nowhere two out of three of their children have red hair.
What color was the mailman's hair?

@Granite I was thinking, in order to make it easier on the player and show it's not really a 'strange mood' as such, they'd claim a workshop, then make your usual strange mood list, but then you'd allocate certain items and they'd only use those. If they failed to complete the 'mood' they'd probably just get fed up of your fort and leave.

I was thinking after they've gone there'd be a range of how much they liked your fort:

Excellent - Increases trade with their race, migrants if a dwarf, standing with their race/guild/religion, very likely to return soon, possibly as a migrant (only applicable for dorfs! :P )
Good - As above, but slightly less, and still likely to come back within a few years. No migration though, so you'll want to get it Excellent next time!
Ok - Not a bad fort, but not a particularly good one either. Just so-so. You may get a bit more trade and such, and they may come back in a few years.
Bad - A really bad fort. They're not going to bother coming back, and you'll probably see a decrease in migrants and trade over the coming months.
Terrible - They hated every minute. If they're the head of a prominent group you could see some serious unrest in your fort. Also be prepared to lose standing with their race if foreign, and to see less migrants and trade if they're dwarfvish.
Deadly - Quite simply, they got killed, or died of hunger, starvation, falling etc. (Old age shouldn't count!) Expect to see their friiends come back. With weapons.
