Shallow metals? Deep metals? What's the difference?

I just downloaded the latest version, and I'm seeing these on the site selector display. What's the difference and what do they mean?

It refers, I believe, to how shallow/deep the metal deposits are on the map.

Shallow metals are near the surface and Deep metals well below. Pay attention to the plurals or lack thereof, they are (usually) accurate. You can see more details in the missing metals thread, or future of the fortress, or the development thread, or really all over. :)

Shallow metals usually means iron :)

I have tons of hematite on my map, 6 veins in total. Not a single coal or flux stone, though.

plural means more than one type.
no indication means totally no metal at such site at all, for good.

"Deepmetal" sounds like a pretty bad-ass material, but sadly it seems to mainly describe tetrahedrite.

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)

If a biome has both a shallow metal (singular) and a deep metal (also singular), will the be the same metal, or different?

deep/shallow metals refer to the depth
Plural is accurate, though I've seen reports that cinnabar and cobaltite  taking up one/both of these slots...and this seems to be an accurate report from my experiences.

type of metal still depends on the layer, In my current map I've got tetrahedrite near the top and hematite next to the magma sea...depends on the gen, and the site finder, while greatly improved, doesn't tell you much...

More importantly, I've embarked on plenty of areas that have flux stone but I can never find any goddamn coal.

I'm guessing from everything that's been reported that some mineral is quasi-randomly selected from the raws, based upon the layer type.  Probably if you do get lignite or coal, you're going to lose out on an actual mineral, sort of like the wonders of cobaltite or kaolinite.

About the only way I can see to check this out (unless someone else hasn't already posted this somewhere already), is to have people start reporting what they find on shallow metal(s)/deep metal(s) embarks and cross-reference with the minerals raws. I'm also wondering what kind of results people are typically getting when it's metals instead of metal, whether it's one extra per biome change or if it's capped in some fashion.

Could even class the minerals if this is the case...

Funny how I still haven't bothered with a metal industry on my current fortress, I'm more interested in planning out nestboxes and bee hives and trying to get another sheep, and strangely enough a cat.

Hell, metals are now hard to find. Thanks God for Reveal, there is nothing more frustrating than looking for a decent metal vein that there is not..

I have yet to have this experience.  I'm neck-deep in Garnerierite, which is still better than no metal for....  some reason, I guess?
