I experimented with a non-lethal gravity trap. It works awesomely and even stops the water flow itself. The only problem is that you fall faster than sand. :P

You know that if MCEdited, sand/gravel platforms can still collapse when a block falls onto it or falls near it, provided it's a lone block, and all adjacent blocks have no support beneath them (can be a hidden detonator near/under the floor). So the bottom-most block is the main foundation, and must be dragged down in order to continue the chain. This cuts down on some major real estate; which is also why I advised using MCEdit primarily. You can still use the water and torch trap. In fact, 1 water block can be released and flow past a single torch, which then causes the domino effect with the rest of the floor, and the sand that starts the collapse of the floor also plugs the water flow which started the collapse in the first place (like you made).

Build a giant sand castle on the beach with a iron door, lever and diamond statue with a chest near it behind the door (and in an obsidian room), the sand castle will be activated by the lever, causing it to collapse into the ground below. That's what I have on the save I give to random kids I know. They rage because of the video I show them about the diamonds and such inside the chest, the chest is empty.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.  The obvious solution is to chain the baby up at the entrance as a kobold detector.
