Looking for a specific RTS
« on: April 24, 2011, 10:20:56 pm »

So I am looking for an RTS to play, and i have a few criteria I am looking for.

1. needs to run on my Vaio laptop with intel graphics card.
2. not focused on resource gathering and hyper-clicking, I want it to feel a bit like AI War or Supreme Commander where you kinda focus more on the tactics side of things.
3. Available on Steam, GOG, or ???

Games I can run but dont feel like playing right now (not necessarily fitting the above criteria):
AI War
Stronghold(s)
Warcraft 3
Seven Kingdoms
Age of Empires 2

I really like how AI War got rid of all the resource gathering part of the game, sent it to the background and focused on moving unis and taking down your enemy. There are some aspects I dont like about AI War such as the EPIC length of the game. I also felt Supreme Commander did this pretty well and let the player focus on units and breaking down the enemy.

Suggestions?

Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth 2 sound like exactly what you're looking for, but sadly they're not available on GOG.

Cant seem to find easy ways to dl Red Alert 2 or Myth 2. Wasn't there some open source game that was inspired by Myth?

Not to my knowledge. Although I'd love to be wrong on that because Myth was one of my favorite games. :P

I suggest Company of Heroes and Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. While both use resources, the resources are acquired via holding control points and both games are focused around commanding squads. Both games ran on my old laptop which had an intel gma 950 integrated graphics card, though for CoH I had to put the graphic on low setting. Both games are fun.

I'd say if you're looking at Cmpany of Heroes, you give Men of War some consideration as well, from my experience of both, Men of War gives you far much more things you can pull off in the middle of the battlefield. The way it works most of the time, natural terrain and architecture around the map automatically turns into controls point like in DoW and CoH as in certain situations they bequeath quite a bit of control over the map even without the devs intentionally implementing a control point scheme with points to buy your troops. One of the advantages of this when playing online is the possibility that these point are likely going to change as the match goes on. You won't arbitrarily gain points for taking an isolated and far-away position like in DoW or CoH.
There are game modes where there are points to capture of course, but I find the ones where they're not in play much more exciting.

Dark Crusade would be amazing, if the map was 5 to 10 times larger, and the AI wasn't so braindead  :-[

Yeah, it would have given transports a larger role to play. The expanded maps in Fire Storm over Kronus did offer a much large playing space though. I remember one map where I made the mistake of not building any transports and many a battle were fought without the aid of my foot troops.
