clay used as normal stone
« on: February 20, 2011, 07:47:52 pm »

Has anyone else noticed that when you harvest clay it will be used by masons to make normal stone crap? Is this intended? Cause if it is you could literrally make a surface fort and never dig out anything ever.

This appears to be possible, and the raws seem to indicate that this is intentional.  There's no specific thing in the raws to show that anyone tried to disable this, and two minutes into a game I realized I can build walls with raw clay, so we may assume that the instant Toady loaded up his test run he was aware of this.  I'm enjoying it, my towering red fort is looking glorious.

Clay walls make lots of sense, but (unfired)clay mechanisms and grates are a bit silly

It's a bug.  And a fixed one (for 31.20), at that:

It looks as if this can be re-bugged by adding [ITEM_HARD] to the clay material, which will cause it to be respected as a stone.  There's always bricks though, so you can make clay bricks to make a clay fort.  Just one additional step for the construction process...

Still, that was awesome!  I love clay forts, I feel like some sort of enormous child with a sandbox now!

one aditional step that costs fuel, though. why use clay instead of wood in that case?

The question was why you WOULDN'T want to use wood.  :P

Still. Disappointment it's going to be fixed--my first fortress after the patch (well, one where I didn't embark with a caravan at the mouth of a beast's lair and immediately got eaten by it, except for one dwarf who ran to the river and got eaten by an alligator, so, second fortress) had a massive hall of fire clay furniture, with fire clay walls and fire clay doors keeping me safe while the fire clay water reservoirs held desalinated water pumped through fire clay pipes and fire clay pumps...

Okay... MAYBE clay needs to be less awesome. But it was great while it lasted!

It is still awesome if you play as something else than dwarves. Like Kobolds Cutebolds.

wooden rampart reinforced with clay is some of the easiest settlement defence, while being quite effective.
paste wet clay or mud on the outer side would even grant it fire resistence.
sadly the game does not go that far.

Not if you have magma. Unlimited building material ftw.

And wood is limited in smaller embarks.

Now I can be cheap and have more than one building material! Clay and green glass fortress here I come!
