How to stop amphibious titans?
« on: February 20, 2011, 05:09:14 pm »

Have you ever had that annoying moment where a Titan shows up, ignores your front gate, dives into the river, destroys the grate, swims up your water channel and emerges in your bath house?  I would like some advice on how to stop giant yellow emaciated ducks from scaring the ladies.  Please.

I know they are building destroyers, so grates and floodgates are useless, they are trapavoid so traps in the channels are useless.

I have some ideas though; one is to create a hatch in the floor of the channel to be opened in an emergency, as even a Titan can't jump a 7 feet wide gap.  But if the Titan flies, so much for that.  Another one is to create another channel to funnel magma into the water channel, solidifying it into obsidian.  The Titan won't be able to breach natural rock, bonus if you catch the poor bastard in it thus encasing him in sweet, precious obsidian.  Or open the roof in a cold climate/season and freeze him to death.

Discuss.

Would a natural stone fortification (i.e. carved not built) help? I've not yet understood which critters can swim through fortifications under which circumstances, partly due to a lack of such occasions. :p

Pressure can force them through, otherwise natural stone fortifications should work.

I usually just train a military, personally. I suppose if you aren't gun-ho about danger rooms that could be an issue, though, as without a danger room military sort of sucks.

Use fortifications. Use two in a row if you are worried about pressure, but they don't haver to be natural.

They don't even need to be natural. I remember when I was beginning, I thought building destroyers could destroy constructions. I then learnt that they functioned almost exactly like natural walls, and walled in my entire embark XD

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

Any natural tile and any constructed tile only differ in terms of smoothing/engraving.  A constructed wall is just as fine as a constructed wall.  both are immune to building destroyers.  Make your grate have a space or two separating it from the fortification, because building destroyers can destroy things with a space in between them and the thing.  Not sure how this applies to obstacles in the way, but it never hurts.

Also, build a U bend that goes from the river, through the U-bend, and then into the plumbing proper.  Include a method by which the U-bend can be opened and drained down into the caverns or off the edge of the map, so that at the flip of a switch you can shut off your plumbing and leave everything draining somewhere safe.  The beast will get dragged down into this other area and neutralized until you're ready to face it.

I've found that an axe(or two) to the face is good deterrent for any unwanted guests.

I actually make 2 level deep moats

XXXX       XXXXXXX
XXXXWWWXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Without ramps and a fortification. The amphibious titan doesn't seem to want to fall into the empty moat (level 1). In that event He has to go through 3 layers of pressure diffusing walls and a fortification wall.

Since the fortifications are after the pressure diffusers there should be 0 chance of the titan (or any object getting through due to pressure.

In general my design then proceeds to a 10 level series of stairwells to a cistern and again a 3 deep pressure diffuser and a surrounding of fortifications.

Also any dwarven engineer worth his salt has pepared a special place for the Titan so they may trap and sacrifice goblins to it (and the occasional uppity dwarf that things this is a democracy!)

Amphibious creatures can swim right through fortifications if the water is 7/7

as far as I know, nothing can get through a Fortification except small fish, fluids, arrows and the frequent cursing of the shooters of said arrows.
