Laptop cooling
« on: February 25, 2011, 04:16:04 pm »

I'm not big on promoting products but I just have to share this one. I have a desktop replacement gaming laptop that has always had serious overheating problems due to SLI graphics cards and such. I've tried several laptop stands including ones with stands but until this last one none of them really helped.

I bought the NZXT Cryo LX and it's been great. It also has extra usb ports on the back which I appreciate. My temps while playing ARMA 2 went from 190-221 down to 160-190. I have yet to have a reboot due to overheating since using it. It's expensive, but my now dry balls appreciate it.

160?!
Wait.
...
Nobody uses Fahrenheit to measure computer temperatures.
Nobody.

Huh.
I just got the icepack from the freezer and put it under the hot side of my laptop.
Works like a charm, and cools it down to around 15C  :P

Yeah, I do that too with laptops with overheating problems.

ATM I have a netbook (a new netbook) and no such problems, but back then I used to keep several packs in the fridge, to switch.

Lesson learned from OP: Don't buy laptops that have design flaws that cause overheating problems.

$70? Kinda pricey, but I could really use one of those.

Lesson learned from OP: Don't buy laptops that have design flaws that cause overheating problems.

They tend to be several hundred dollars cheaper, but then again the extra heat makes them much slower than they could otherwise be.

In my experience a reasonably-sized book under the end of it works just as well. It lifts the back of the laptop up so air can circulate under the fans more freely.

And if it still doesn't work, then man, you were ripped off.
