jewlers workshop creates finished goods instead of cut g
« on: March 22, 2007, 04:39:00 am »

so i have this pesant cranking along on what looks to be a nine-item artifact.  he wants cut gems.

no problem, i figure.  i set my jewler's workshop to cut some glass, then some gems.  but no matter what i assign him to cut, i never end up with cut jems.

on careful inspection of the workshop, it seems that the jewler is directly producing finished goods, and not cut jems, and theyre being hauled off to the stockpile.  I've got a "clear glass amulet" and an "aventurine necklace" or something like that.

I've cut plenty of gems in previous forts, and i really dont know quite what to make of this behavior.  i didnt even know you could make items directly from gems, i thought you had to encrust them first.

am i just doing something wrong?

No...that definitely sounds like a bug. The only "completed" items that it should be making are 'large gems', which are rather rare.

Try deconstructing it and building another shop.

Also, was the jewelers' shop converted in a previous mood from a craftsdwarves' shop? That may cause a problem if it did.

That's a bug? I've always found that maybe one out of every three times I cut a gem it results in a craft instead of a cut gem. Frustrating, but they do tend to have a nice trade value (which is just about all one can do with them).

But getting a +turquoise bracelet+ instead of  "shining gems" has led more than one of my stalwart dwarves to insanity.

It's a feature, not a bug, that dwarves will occasionally feel inspired to make a random craft out of gems. As was mentioned, they tend to be worth rather a lot.

That said, it can be rather annoying when you actually just want a cut gem.

Like AlStar said, when jewlers are high in skill and inspired, they often turn the gems they cut into finished goods. They are Jewlers after all...

gah! i'll murderize him!  hes only a novice and i'm two items away from completing a nine-item mood!  pretentious twit thinks hes too good to just cut some frikin glass?  it was like, three or four carvings in a row, too.

maybe one of the less inspired jewlers will take over before my moody dwarf's head explodes.
