Abandoned a fortress (and caravan)
« on: February 17, 2011, 10:27:11 pm »

I made a fortress in a bad spot with aquifer near the surface and both my picks were lost to cave-ins during attempts to get to the rock underneath.  Was trying to trade a bunch of stuff for a single pick from the caravan that had arrived, but he said 'No.'  So, out of frustration, I just up and abandon the fortress.  Just to see if I could make it on the second try, I reclaim the fort and am surprised to see all the caravan items laying around just for the taking.  Has anyone seen this before?  Just to clarify, the caravan was still in the trade depot when I abandoned.

Every item that is on your embark map will get scattered on an abandon and reclaim. Whether you made them, goblin corpses had them, or anything that's not rot-able really. If there's a caravan worth of items in your depot when you abandon, the same thing applies.

The items are yours for free (you could have just de-constructed the depot though, the traders would leave, you get the items, but they'll be grumpy for the negative profit).

As far as I know, the Mountainhomes will never get so pissed at you as to stop trading - actually, I don't think the mood the merchants leave in matters at all to your home civ, except possibly for barrony/kingdom stuff. And marginally angry elves decide "you know what? Those DORF BASTARDS don't GET string!" And fill their carts with things like Giant Desert Scorpions, and War Panthers. If you steal too much of their stuff, they'll actually attack you, but... well, wood weapons.  Humans may do this too, but usually bring better goods if they're happy.

What we're saying is, basically, it pays to piss off the elves. But not too much. An arrow to the right floating rib often offends.

...and humanite is almost the same good as goblinite.
