Magma-proof windows?
« on: February 18, 2011, 03:30:00 pm »

Quick question.
Do windows (gems and/or glass alike) hold magma? Or should I just use plain walls?

Anything that prevents magma from actually entering its own tile is functionally magma-proof, even wooden doors, so long as nobody opens them.

Windows occupy their own tile, preventing water and magma from entering.

Thanks!
Note to self: make a magma aquarium... magmarium... whatever.

Bonus points if it's filled with magma creatures as well.  Just note that any wild animals in there will cause your dwarves to flee, as they can see the creature and will run from it.  Also, building destroyers or tantrum-wreckers will lead to Fun.

That, I am aware of. Where would the FunŽ be if everyone was behind safe, unbreakable glass walls?  ;D
Other note to self: hey, I wonder if trolls prioritize breaking windows over trying to break in... self-protecting external magma reservoirs... mh...

You can place pressure plates around the window, to close a flood gate, to make it so when the window breaks it'll lock away that part of the reservoir and prevent the entire thing spilling out.

Generally, I've found that building destroyers only really stop to destroy things right next to them when they are pathing towards your fort.

I once had a dragon in 40d that stopped to destroy the drawbridge it was standing on that was the only way to get into my fort. *facepalm* It then looked around very confused about its sudden inability to get into my fort, and decided to walk over and topple my windmills that were nearby before getting bored and leaving.

From then on, I made sure I had cage traps and stationed my military past the drawbridges.

Anyway, if you have a magma pool behind glass in the corridor you leave open as the "sieger's enterance", then making both walls breakable glass could lead to all kinds of amusing troll repellants.
