Possible New Mode: Dungeon Builder

A dwarf fortress can already very much be dungeon-like when abandoned. However I think it would be fun to have a mode specifically around the idea of creating a dungeon. You'd control the servants and slaves of a "dark lord" type character. Could be an evil human warlord, a dark wizard when they appear in the game, a demon, or an intelligent megabeast (I'm not sure if they are? Dragons maybe?). These servants/slaves could be of many races, even humans, elves and dwarves in addition to the more obvious goblins and kobolds. You could even command demons and other powerful evil creatures once you get you're dungeon established enough. There'd be nobles of a sort, almost certainly including the Dungeon Master. If you get you're dungeon to a high enough level you could even get the dark lord himself, or one of his lieutenants, similar to the way the dwarven monarch can choose to live at you're fortress.

The dungeon would have wealth like a fortress, but also a "danger" stat. Increasing danger makes you're dark lord happy and he might send some gifts. There'd be a caravan of sorts as well, as well as perhaps the goblin caravan. In addition wealth and danger will attract adventurers that seek to take you're wealth and/or defeat the danger that the dungeon presents to the surrounding countryside. If you're danger is high enough you might even get attacked by an army! Once the Army Arc is underway (which is actually probably going to be long before this idea is implemented if it ever is), you could send out raiders. Doing this increases danger and can of course be a source of loot for the dungeon.

yeah, i think though the player being not some omni-sentient unseen director but a actual unit in the game that can kick ass yet is 'game over' if they die would be a good aspect. though i doubt it would become a 'new mode' so much as a 'new mod'

I didn't really think of it that way, though. Losing the dark lord wouldn't necessarily mean losing. More likely a new dark lord would rise totake his place.

I'd like to be able to mod this, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I have no modding knowledge/experience.

Isn't this how Adventure mode is going to play out later? Where you could eventually tame dark beings, lead cities etc.

yeah, i think that is about right but it would have vastly more micro management. also you cant be a dragon or MB or titan in adventure mode. nah, this sounds more like a mod... though IF it could be made as a game mode of it's own... i see no reason toady wouldn't put it in as another part of the game once we hit final release. i mean with all the great mods like defense mod and such he cant really just endorse them as he might go a break them in the next arc. however i do think that come final version where the only thing left is patches and balances we could see officially endorsed 3rd party mods as a 'check this out while your at it'. i know UT is sold with mods ready on the disks if you get special versions and Valve are crazy about making mods official for their beloved source engine.

I think this is just fortress mode some way down the road, when you can play as an 'evil' race, send squads and armies around to attack traders or villages and take slaves, and then adventurer groups from their civilization (maybe even your own you had retired) or armies might be sent to your fortress by some lord who had it with you.

I don't think it'd be a part of adventure mode, because it's hard enough to properly designate a whole fortress in fortress mode. :P Unless either you could swap modes as necessary and sort of do them both simultaneously, or if the game got good enough at procedurally generating things, you could just give your architects some general orders for building.

I could understand a mode where you play a dark force (for example a Sphere land) that has taken on sentience and is seeking to devour the souls of living, or even dead, beings and thus creates caverns of untold riches and dangers in an attempt to lure people towards it and finish them off in the same stroke.

or heck a Demon or chained up god who requires souls and/or contracts with other beings to do the same with the end result of you being able to play these impressive characters.

A Dungeon builder mode COULD work... but honestly it is an entirely new mode and it is probably too much work.
