freezing, in most substances, causes the object to contract, however, water (and therefore alcohol, containing water) expands, breaking things i.e. dwarves open and releaing the pool of blood,

Er, things contract a little. On the other hand, when water freezes, its bulk expands significantly (try it; put a can of Coke or similar in the freezer for a couple of hours). It's the frozen water expanding and trying to occupy space that doesn't exist that would cause the rupture.

..but that's not really what freezing to death is anyway.

..which would leave no blood at all, which was the OP's point. =p

Yeah, to cause a pool of blood, they'd need to freeze to death, then THAW.

Hmm... an open-air pit in a freezing biome, with a floodgate-controlled lava chamber underneath.  Mwah hah hah!

That would indeed be awesome, if you were running a gobbo fort, maybe.

What you REALLY need to do is trap a few of the pointy-eared freaks, turn THEM in to Elven Blood Blocks, and build your depot out of that.  As a warning to the rest of the elves, of course.

Be even better if it menaced with spikes of elven ear.
