download dfhack
run dfreveal -DO NOT UNPAUSE
hit d a couple times to get into dig more - DO NOT UNPAUSE
explore and look for flashing blue, that is the area of your aquifer.
Did I mention, do not unpause?
go back to dfreveal window and hit enter, let it un-reveal and go about flooding your fortress.

Just try it! Its not like you die IRL if Urist McMiner falls into magma.

Also note that the game telling you there was an aquifer on the map doesn't mean there actually is. Similarly, the game not telling you there is an aquifer doesn't mean that there isn't. It is mistaken sometimes, in particular when your map is on the edge of a mountain biome. I've had maps where 2/3 of the map was mountain and 1/3 was desert, the desert portion claimed to have an aquifer on the embark map, and then I embarked to find that the whole desert was dry, all the way to the bedrock.

You should be able to find water no problem once you breach the first underground cavern anyway, just dig down, dig deep, in a few places and you should be fine.

I turn off aquifers nowadays, because they're just a pain in the neck with no benefit whatsoever at this point.

Yeah, and then you get a slimy or oozing Forgotten Beast into your cavern layer, and your water supply gets all yucky. Or you get one that makes it through your fortification and then rips your floodgates to shreds.

Aquifers > Cavern water.

Lytha likes fire clay, rose gold, green glass, bags, the colour midnight blue, and cats for their aloofness. When possible, she prefers to consume tea and cow cheese.

@Lythia: Plenty of ways to get around those problems. Personally I prefer surface lakes and such - they just look nicer compared to the mess that is aquafirs.

I am going to copy the chicken entry and rename everything chocobo and make it 100x the size of a normal chicken and make it rideable.  Too bad our dwarves probably wont ride them. >_>
