Fortress suicide run
« on: February 15, 2011, 01:31:59 pm »

This has happened to me twice now and it's pissing me off.
I get my fortress all nice and running, sealed topside fishing area (grates over a stream), long trapped entrance tunnel, magma smelters and forges going, barely nicked the 3rd cavern on my way down and sealed that off, countess, mayor, and captain all in royal rooms, way too much farming than I actually need, and lots of max skilled dwarves.
Fishing and drinking is zone only (which resets itself whenever I do pretty much anything, but eh), corpses and items and all forbidden, only a few dwarves are set to clean (I hack cleaning the map occasionally, just to keep things pretty), and there is nothing outside of my fortress of any interest. I have one burrow, an emergency alert only one that covers the entire inside of my fortress.

Then an ambush will meet my (forbidden) line of traps, and suddenly ALL of my dwarves will rush out of my fortress. All of them. If I v over them and check the u list they all show No Job.
Nothing is scaring them, no titans or FBs or anything, they all just decide to run past 4 ambushes worth of archers and check out the new spring flowers.

Any clues?

Why not just build a drawbridge to wall them in?
To actually answer your question, no, I have no idea what is happening here. Sorry.

Sounds suspiciously like they are all going to pick up a dropped item from something that died in the traps, like a sock.

That's what I thought when I read this but he says they're showing "No Job".

Missed that.  That is pretty strange!

No Job and I've got all death items and corpses as forbidden.
I have had problems previously with them claiming death items as their own as soon as they drop, but that's one of the reasons I set everything to forbid.

Maybe it's just that I'm running DF off a flash drive between two different computers, I have seen a couple other weird bugs. Like hot and warm biomes freezing in the winter on standard generated worlds, phantom squads showing up in therapist but not the military screen (and if that happens, any dwarf I try to assign to a legitimate squad disappears from the military screen).

This may be related to a bug caused by not closing down DF between switching worlds.

Could be. I try to shut down completely between worlds, but that doesn't always happen.

i'd say use something to make them just be forced to stay in, dwrabridge or anything of the sort
