but if it appeared outside the bottom layer, would you be able to make, say, slade swords?
No, because 1) it's stone, not metal, and 2) it's undiggable.
Actually, it'll take the route of obsidian swords.  You'd need wood and that stone, to make it into a sword.  Actually by default you can't, but if you add MAX_EDGE to the raws for slade, it could be made into rock swords at the craftsdwarf shop.

Swords? Why SWORDS? Why edged weapons and not blunt ones?

Makes me think it would be fun to replace slade with addy... Or perhaps one of those combustive stones some people mod in with a boiling point of 0...

Last time I checked, stone swords were still bugged and used the wood material instead. I don't know if this has been fixed.

To be a blunt weapon, it'd have to be smelted first, so you'd need to add a metal material type for slade bars, and make it into weapon and/or armor grade material, which is the easy part.  Then it'd have to be dragged to a smelter, and then dragged to a forge.

I'm sure we can set up something to drop it into all of those. That'd be faster than dragging.

Make a reaction that produces a weapon directly from slade. It goes like this:

[PRODUCT:100:1:WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_HAMMER_WAR:INORGANIC:SLADE]

Problem solved (replace ITEM_WEAPON_HAMER_WAR with whatever weapon you want to make).

Also, a silver war hammer has a mass of 4 kg. A slade one has a mass of 80. They fucking hurt.

It's been fixed since 31.13.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.
