My soldiers' clothes are falling off (40d question)
« on: February 15, 2011, 04:42:16 pm »

My barracks is full of clothing on the ground, I'm pretty sure this is a result of their vigorous sparring sessions, however the problem is they won't either put the clothing back on or get rid of them. I've set some to dump in the past but no one will touch it, I'm thinking this is because it's reading that someone owns this stuff, but does that mean I'm cursed with the minor annoyance of a filthy barracks?

I heard your like sieges so I put a Goblin fortress in your fortress so you could siege while besieged.

This happens I believe when you order them to wear their uniform over clothes and the uniform conflicts with what they normally wear. If so, order them to replace the clothes with their uniform, wear their uniform all the time, and then dump the stack of clothes they drop.

I think building a cabinet in the barracks helps too, haven't seen that in a while though.

tolkafox's explanation is valid in 31.x, but improbable at best in 40d. No, more likely you've got them doing wrestling sparring and they're tearing each others' clothes off. Building cabinets in their individual bedrooms helps sometimes, but not usually, as they don't haul clothes unless they're not soldiers, which they probably won't be (and can't be, once they reach Great in a weapon skill), and only rarely haul store their owned items even if you make them civilians. In addition, other dwarves won't dump owned items, so getting rid of them is somewhat tricky.

The usual solution is to build a drawbridge over half of your barracks. The dwarf that builds the bridge will move the clothes that would block the bridge to the other half of the barracks. Once that's done, build a drawbridge over the other half of the barracks. The dwarf that builds the second bridge will move the clothes that would block that bridge to the first half of the barracks, which will be where there's a drawbridge. Link the bridges to a lever or two, raise them, then lower them, and all of those clothes will be atomsmashed. You might have to do some toying with doors and such to make sure the clothes get put in the right place, but that's a relatively minor issue.

Alternatively, hide the clothes so you don't see them anymore, and forget about them.

Geez, Dwarf Fortress: Where you need to build two drawbridges just to clean up some clothing lying around
