if you generate a world in which the dwarves have died off, you can start a fort that will only get the first 2 waves of migrants, and no dwarf caravan.
I intend to try this. Any good way to go about genning said world? Any parameters or modding that can be done to help, or do I just have to generate worlds until I get the right one?

imagine your hermit slaying each of the migration waves by themselves

i'm going to do that now.

I tried setting some custom parameters: Civs:0 and Playable-Civs:Yes results in ungennable world, with Playable-Civs:No resulting in a world where the "Start Playing" option doesn't have the Fortress mode available, just Adventurer and Legends.

I've tried setting MAXAGE for dwarves to something low, hoping they'd die out with such ridiculously short lifespans, but no go on that, either.

Interesting idea, but in practice, I think it would be horribly boring.  You'd spend most of the time just staring at the screen, doing nothing but waiting.  Sticking with the original 7 would be a lot more fun.
