Lava Creature Usage

So I found me some lava crabs.  What happens when caged exactly, or fighting?  Do I need to watch out for burning soldiers, or use metal cages?  Can I melt ice using one of these?

Lava crabs have some sort of ranged attack ability, though I do not know how effective it is or whether you can use it through fortifications. (I do know the ranged attack shoots pebbles rather than fire, so does not burn things.)

Wiki claims they shoot basalt, which acts as very blunt arrows.  I think my steel-armored soldier is safe from that.
