Something wrong with cleaning
« on: August 24, 2006, 02:42:00 am »

it seems like the cleaning task only occurs at a certain range; while 2 engineers were setting up stonefall traps beside a huge amount of spread blood, I turned off every task other than cleaning, and waited for them to finish. Instead of cleaning the blood, they went to "No job" (not drinking, eating, partying, or sleeping), and wandered back to the main area of my fortress, without cleaning the blood. It's been about 20 minutes now, of both of them still on nothing but cleaning, and they haven't done anything. What gives?

Buckets. The tool for cleaning is a bucket. They need it like a miner needs a pick.

It's the same for me and I have three buckets. It seems spatterings of blood is not something they clean up.

Yeah, cleaning is blocked off to a range right now for speed considerations.  It can't do full-map sweeps too frequently though, but there are lots of ways around this.  I just haven't gotten around to it.

It would be nice if they at least checked more often. I can draft someone, order them to go to the middle of a bloody smear an entire screen (with the menu tabbed out) across, set their only job to cleaning, and deactivate them. They go into "No Job" and start wandering off and only half the time do they think to stop and clean before they're well away from the bloodstains.

I never have problems with bloodiness inside my fortress. My dwarves clean it pretty fast.

The problem is that if it ever gets out of control in a main hallway (if, say, someone steps on a rat while all your cleaners are busy), there's no way you're ever going to clean it off without using a flood.  Ever.  In a situation like that, cleaning just becomes dwarves wasting their time.

It'd be nice if blood automatically cleaned itself every season or so, the way the refuse stockpile does.  Blood is a neat effect, but having my entire fortress stained with the blood of some vermin somebody accidently stepped on in my entrance hall gets old fast.

I'd prefer another solution, something that stops spread from spatters but still leaves a bit of foot printing from larger pools -- should be easy enough to do.  You just stain the unit's feet and give them a counter when they step in a larger pool.  Then there'd be some spreading in tracks (differs from the no spread from spatters solution in this way), but nothing excessive and nothing from lone spatters.

As long as the blood dries occasionally and the pools don't have an infinite amoutn of blood in them like they do right now.
