I have a bunch of dogs

I have a bunch of stray tame dogs, but I get the message no creature when I tell the trainer to train war animals?

Your animal trainer will only grab dogs roaming freely, not dogs that are caged or restrained.

This answers the question of "how would one only train certain creatures for war/hunting when the animals list has them all mixed together?" I've often pondered.

I guess if I keep all non-pets caged & only release the bears, elephants I want as war animals they should end up being trained. Off to test.

zooming into one of the dogs, it's just sitting there in the meeting area, no chain or anything.

Do the dogs belong to anyone?  Animals which are someone's pet can't be trained.

Are they adult dogs, or puppies?  Puppies can't be trained.

DF has a weird job management layout. Animal Trainer probably didn't get to that particular dog for awhile.
