Half-Hearted Ambushes?
« on: February 13, 2011, 02:58:13 pm »

Most my fortress defenses are made up of an initial line of cage traps, made to capture any trolls or megabeasts that might wander in, and then the big guns, usually some sort of drowning trap and a ton of weapon traps to shred the goblin hordes.

But the problem is that I end up catching too many goblins, and the ambushes always just kinda mill around my entrance, keeping me from doing anything, but never actually attacking.

What should I do to prevent this from happening? I'm considering removing all but one line of cage traps, and then just rigging my drowning trap to some pressure pads so I can just knock out the entire attack at once.

This has been posted here ten thousand and one times.

Each goblin squad has a leader.
The rest of the squad follows the leader similar to war dog following a dwarf.
When the leader is caged, the squad will stay at the last location until their timer runs up and they leave, or they spot a living target to go chase.

To prevent milling about, lure them with something live, like a puppy.
