Is there anything *at all* I can do to encourage elves to bring me more grizzly bears?  Or at least more animals in general?

Breed the grizzlies you have, for one, otherwise it appears to be luck based on their caravan size and where their home is.

Sadly, I only had one, and it got killed.  =(

This is why you take care of your breeding stock until you can properly abuse them.  A situation of "I learned this for next time".  On the plus side, because the elves have brought bears, you're basically assured that they will again.

For future reference, I've had luck getting breeding pairs/more animals by purchasing every cage the elves bring every time.
