Rotted Corpses still take up tomb space
« on: August 23, 2006, 11:44:00 pm »

If a dwarf dies, is carried to the graveyard stockpile, rots, and then you setup a coffin and mark it "use for burial", it will place the completely rotted dwarf inside.

Also horses and mules (named ones) get put in the coffin magically as well.

Again all of these corpes are rotted - no bodies, no bones.

dwarves who burn up in lava or drown in the river and leave no corpse also get a coffin assigned which remains permanently empty.

That's how it works in real life too if someone's body is totally lost/incinerated/etc. The coffins serve more as a memory, since it's far more convenient to just let the corpses quickly rot away to bones, and then nothing.

But it requires to build way more coffins than really necessary. I don't want a coffin for that guy who drowned or that war dog who died of old age. I want to bury that guy who got his lung mangled in a sparring incident and then while fist fighting with someone got his arm and leg severed off and bled to death!

Coffins are not for the dead, they are for the living. The relatives of the guy who drowned and the owner of the dog in this case. The dog itself really doesn't care anymore.

Perhaps, in my early game, some ethical constraits are... loosened.  Perhaps the dwarves so sacrificed have found peace in their mass graves.  I NEED the new coffins for my youth, who depart this life on a frequent basis through no fault of mine!

I've been placing burial plots ahead of time, but only activating coffins as dwarves need them.  It works pretty well for me.

I completely overlooked this thread... I feel silly for posting in General Area. o.O

Edit: Also I tried activating the tomb as I needed it for my own dwarves & the first tomb to get taken up was by the dwarf that rotted.

Ah, I didn't really understand what the problem was until I read the other thread.  Yeah, that's annoying.
