Smelting turtles?
« on: February 13, 2011, 06:13:08 pm »

I need shell. I am in a freezing biome...

Is there any way to smelt turtles? Or shells? Or should I modify an animal to produce shell??

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

do you have turtles? if your fisherdwarves are catching turtles, there should be lots of shells in your fishery.

without catching something that has a material:shell in it, though, there's no way to get shell.

Easiest way is to mod in pet turtles, so your dwarves bring them, and they'll breed in your fortress.

just add the
[PET]
and possibly the
[COMMON_DOMESTIC]
tag to turtles.
Probably have to remove the
[NOT_BUTCHERABLE]
tag, though. Genesis has cave tortoises as pets. you could look at that to see how it's done.

I need shell for my dwarf mood. However, there is no water anywhere on the map except the year-round frozen lakes.

i'd imagine that moding a reaction to produce shells would be easier than to try and smelt turtles :\
look over on the wiki, they have a neat page on reactions an a buch of pages on the necessary tokens, note though that you should mod an existing reaction, like MAKE_FINE_PEWTER or something, or it would require a regen for it to take effect

From what I've heard the easiest thing to do would be to add [SHELL] to the material template for hooves.  That way you could quickly butcher a horse, cow, or other hoofed animal to get the required ingredients.

Lame excuse? 'Having a drink instead' is the dwarfiest reason to not get something done, short of accidentally flooding your home with magma. Or intentionally flooding your home with magma.

If all else fails, wall him in his workshop.
