Cave in losses
« on: February 11, 2011, 08:34:21 pm »

Namely stone.  I'm caving in an entire cavern layer to flatten it, and in the process will be dropping a lot of valuable things like gold and gems on top of other valuable things like platinum and more gems.  So, when doing this, what are the losses?  How much will be destroyed, if any, in the un-mined layers, or the loose stone on the floor?  For the record, I'm walling the edges before the collapse, to prevent things from flying off the map.

Natural walls won't get destroyed.

Wait, so the cavern will drop a level, and the walls will be intact?  Like dropping a brick that's bigger than a mountain?

Yes.  Natural stone walls don't deconstruct when they fall.

Wiki says that it may or may not reveal the stone, so am I going to suddenly have view of 5+ layers of rock, so I can go in and pick out the good bits?  Could this "brick drop" be an alternative to exploratory mining?

Cave-ins are supposed to change the tiles beneath them. If you want that stuff directly below the cave-in, you may want to mine it out and move it first.

Wait, what stuff?  The stuff under the floor that I can't see?
