Most recent occurence: digging out a 6x5 area using ramps.

Known bug? Intentional? Urist being a moron? What?

A rock tile that is converted to a ramp will stay as a ramp if it is not surrounded by other rock tiles.  I reported it once and Toady seemed to indicate that it was intentional.

Tell me, did you press Designate > Dig or Designate > Ramps?

I've had this happen as well - designate a large area for ramps, and sometimes you end up with ramps in the middle. They're easily-enough removed; it just looks odd.

So yeah, I found what causes it.

code:
.....
.^^^.
.^#^.
.^^^.
.....

If you designate the # as a ramp tile, a dwarf will come along, mine it out to make a ramp, and there will simply be a ramp in the middle of nowhere.

EDIT: Okay, so someone else mentioned this. But why should it be intentional?

I don't think it's intentional so much as it is simply updating the squares around the one you just carved. Since there's no more tiles around the ramp you just carved, you won't have any in-game update to occur next to it.

Or it could be just like constructing a ramp in the middle of nowhere, just deciding to stay because it doesn't know if it will have a later use or not.
