People read and enjoy Lolita for other reasons then getting off on it, but rather they enjoy the psychologcal aspects of it... Or so I have been told. I have never read it myself, so I can't realy judge.

I read it, greatly enjoyed it, and wanted to stab the "protagonist" in the head the entire time.  It's an excellent novel.

I don't think it is a good idea to put down someone's novel idea no matter how out there it seems.

As has been said, I'm not entirely sure this idea was novel at all. Certainly not on his part.

But yeah, some of the comments in this thread have been pretty vitriolic, and that doesn't help anyone.

Yes, look at all these comments two obfuscating sentences have caused that many clearly written paragraphs could not.

When it comes to these texts that may or may not be jibberish, it becomes increasingly easy to distinguish between the two as one reads more, even if one is still obfuscated...at least when the work is written well. Dhoka; could you make more text available so the distinction may become clear?

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

(no idea on h1estesmi)

Someone made a joke about Proto-Indo-European earlier, well h1esmi is the first person coppula of PIE. H1 being one of the phonemes of PIE. The est inserted in the middle is the Latin coppula, although I think it's third person in that case.

So... "i (it is) am" is what I'd say.

Ohhh.  Yes, that's very clever.  Thanks for the information!

Where'd you learn about PIE, by the way?

Oh, I've just picked up bits from books. Every "must read for linguistics students" has a section on comparative linguistics. The first comparison they usually show is esti->asti->est->is.

Neat!  Do you recommend Saussure?  I've looked at an excerpt of his stuff and it seems really cool.

Actually, maybe we should take this to PM, because if you have some sort of short list of the "canonical" texts you recommend, I'd be really interested to see it.
