Lake Thawing
« on: January 30, 2011, 05:28:18 pm »

Well, I've found a perfect and ominous embark in the form of a mountain bordering a terrifying lake. Two questions:

1) I used just embark to get on the mountain, but will I still get sieges? The werewolves/demons showed up on the neighbors list but the mountain it self is not actually accessible.
2) I get annual lag spikes when the lake thaws. Is there any way short of flooring the entire lake over to keep it from freezing in the first place?

As for #2, you can turn off temperature in the init files (I think it's "dinit" but I'd have to check to be sure), but that might not take effect on an active world (I can't say for sure because I haven't tried it). Flooring over the lake won't do anything.

By the way, I design table top RPGs and other games. You can buy some.

Flooring over the lake won't do anything unless you also have moving magma over the entire thing.

As for #1, play a few years. If you don't get any sieges or invaders the first couple of years, it'd be safe to say that you won't get any at all.

Well, half my fort died of thirst for whatever reason, so I won't be getting sieges too early.

Well, a sylvan caravan just arrived. I'm fine on the first one. And thanks, changing the temperature setting never occurred to me.

thawing is a huge problem, not noly it hangs the program, also forces me to restrict every water tile just to keep those stupid dwarfs from drowning when spring arrives.

You may have to use burrows and a bit of good timing to take care of your drowning problem.

The answer, of course, is magma.
If you run magma underneath your lake, it won't freeze in the winter.

If you run magma over the lake it'll get a nice covering of obsidian and your dorfs won't be falling in any more.

You could also try damming the lake, if there are only 10 ice tiles to thaw that might help the delay, but I've not done any tests to confirm/disprove this.

i sorta realised, earlier today, that once i was scrolling around world map in embark screen, i saw every other civs appearing in neighbour in mountain. but there is a stream, so i guess that's the reason why you see them too?
